After 243km the flow of Nestos River finally reaches the sea. Through the millennia the transferred material brought by the river from Rila Mountains in Bulgaria (where its sources lie) but also from the mountains of Western Rodopi and Falakro, through where it flows, has formed natural dams and an ecosystem of international importance that covers 55km² and includes lagoons with salt and slightly salt water, swamps with salt and fresh water, as well as the riverside forest of Kotza Osman and endless sandy beaches, mixing sea and fresh water, that in some points is only separated by a few meters of land.
